The National Children's Book and Literacy Alliance Raises It's Voice at ALA Advocacy Rally Asking Congress to Support School and Public Libraries Across America!
NCBLA Board Authors and Staff greet U.S. Senator Jack Reed of Rhode Island, a Senate Library and Education Champion, at the ALA Library Advocacy Rally yesterday at the Capitol in Washington DC!
An energized coalition of NCBLA family and friends, joined NCBLA board authors Katherine Paterson, Steven Kellogg, Nikki Grimes, Linda Sue Park, M.T. Anderson, Mary Brigid Barrett (NCBLA President), and NCBLA Program Director Geri Eddins, adding a bit of color and zest to the sizzling ALA Capitol rally, Raise Your Voice for Libraries!
Pre-rally the NCBLA group rendezvoused at the Library of Congress Jefferson Building. At left is Steven Kellogg, resplendent in a library advocacy hat he made especially for the rally! All the children's book character rally posters were created by NCBLA President Mary Brigid Barrett, who in her non-NCBLA life is also an author and illustrator.
United States National Ambassador for Children's Literature Katherine Paterson chats it up pre-rally with Former First Lady of Virginia, RIF literacy champion, and NCBLA adviser Lynda Johnson Robb. Mrs. Robb's father, President Lyndon Johnson, was the first president to support significant funding for our nation's public and school libraries, providing millions of books free to our nation's children.
Newbery-award winning author
Linda Sue Park ready to march to the rally!
Photo-op: New York Times best-selling author and poet Nikki Grimes with Katherine Paterson! Isn't that Linda Sue, too?!
The Rally!
NCBLA and friends on parade for kids and libraries!
National Book award winning author M.T. (Tobin) Anderson arrives at the rally! Tobin--trying to keep his cool under a black umbrella-represented the NCBLA, making morning Congressional calls to his U.S. Senators John Kerry and Scott Brown, reminding them:
- That Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) should be funded at $300 million to ensure the best possible library resources for our children and all Americans.
- That Improving Literacy Through School Libraries should be funded at $100 million to best prepare students for the 21st century workforce.
- That every school needs a fully-funded school library staffed by a full-time state certified school librarian.
- That every library needs state and local professional development funds to recruit and train school librarians.
- To support the Access to Twenty-first Century Communications and Video Accessibility Act of 2009 (H.R. 3101 and S. 3304)
- To support a free and open Internet for all by voting in favor of net neutrality.
NCBLA authors Linda Sue Park, Katherine Paterson, Steven Kellogg, and Mary Brigid Barrett are joined by NCBLA friends, including Sharon Hancock and Jenny Choy from library champion, publisher Candlewick Press! The NCBLA was thrilled that many Children's Literature New England and the Childrens' Book Guild of Washington DC friends joined us-- Barbara Scotto, Rita Auerbach, Kathy Roche, Anne O'Donnell, Jacqueline Jules, and so many more-- on this glorious day raising their voices for kids and libraries!
NCBLA adviser and former ALSC President Therese Bigelow and NCBLA's children's literature consultant Maria Salvadore and son Nick, discuss the days' events with M.T. Anderson.
The NCBLA authors, joined forces with the American Library Association's Advocacy staff, meeting with their state's Senators and House Representatives both before and after the rally, letting them know that libraries and librarians are necessities, not luxuries, in our children's lives. We need to make sure that all of our children have ready access to school and public libraries, that those libraries are staffed with knowledgeable librarians who can help our kids obtain essential critical thinking tools, providing them with the information they need to work and live in this new century.
MORE RALLY PHOTOS!
Children's literacy consultant and NCBLA friend Rachel Walker just sent us these terrific new rally photos! Thanks Rachel!
Inner Man
We ask ourselves, why people loose what they had achieved in life, why a person gains prosperity and looses it again? The problem is with the inner self. Even though a person can be blessed and be very rich, but if he is not well spiritually with God, the man will lose what He has because he will not have the wisdom and the guidance to take care of it.
This is your connection with God, your power supply is from God and when we don't seek Him, we will be far from Him and left to tend for ourselves, leading us to make wrong decisions.
We may conquer everything, but without God everything is meaningless! And eventually we will lose it.
“This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, expressing spiritual truths in spiritual words.” 1 Corinthians 2:13

Humbleness
Five Important lessons from a humble pencil
- It tells you that everything you do will always leave a mark.
- You can always correct the mistake...
- The important thing in life is what you are from inside and not from outside.
- In life you will undergo painful sharpening which will make you better in whatever you do.
- Finally, to be the best you can be you must allow yourself to be held and guided by the hands that holds you.
Ask yourself, which hand holds you. One thing for sure in God's hands we are safe, protected, guided, led because He takes care of us!
Learn form the humble pencil and allow yourself to be led in the hands of God.

ONE OF THE NICEST COUPLES I KNOW
Friends,
I have had some important life things to deal with recently but rest assured I am back on the blogging pony again.
Before I return to the "hard stuff," I would like to wish a very happy wedding day to my special friends -- and "House On Fire" followers -- Kirsten and Jeff [pictured], who will exchange vows at beautiful Laguna Beach, California, this Saturday, June 26, 2010.
When I moved to Vegas for work more than three years ago, I knew nobody. Kirsten was my landlady and quickly made herself my first friend here. As fate would have it, we have since worked together at two different companies. I am so grateful we met.
Kirsten and Jeff are a really sweet couple and I know their future will be bright and happy.
It does a heart good.
On another personal note, I want to send my love to my beautiful girlfriend Shelley who has stuck by me, and this blog, as I've labored and lurched, and got things right and wrong. Without her, there would be a lot of things I would not see so clearly. She's my touchstone, my best mate, and the love of my life. And so I am blessed.
Keep smiling,
Adrian

Book of Exodus - Month of June 2
Then the LORD said, "Put your hand inside your cloak." So Moses put his hand into his cloak, and when he took it out, it was leprous, like snow. Now put it back into your cloak," he said. So Moses put his hand back into his cloak, and when he took it out, it was restored, like the rest of his flesh. Exodus 4:6-7
“It was restored”, this word restored drew my attention. This is who God is and what God can do.
Many times people blame God for the bad things that happen in their lives and try so hard to find out why. In their minds, they try to understand what happened or how and this only leads them to great frustration.
One thing I learned in one of my most difficult moments was never to question God, but to always know that with God there is a way out – there is a solution, the problem will come to an end.
The verse above also shows that it is He that allows. God can stop anything from happening but when He doesn't it's because He has allowed it to happen. This reminds me of Job who lost everything, God had allowed that to happen knowing that Job is faithful and will not turn his back on Him.
God allowed the hand of Moses to become leprous, because He wanted to show him that He alone is God and He can do great things. And when he placed his hand pack in the cloak He RESTORED it!
God can restore anything because He is God and what He allows to happen, He knows that He can restore the bad for His own glory and honour.
To restore means – to bring back into existence what no longer exists, to re-establish, to bring back to normal condition, bring back to a state of health, to reproduce, reproduce. God can restore anything even to be more than what it was before.
This is God – our Restorer
Ode to Joy
The great Leonard Bernstein conducts from the heart.
Soloists are Gwyneth Jones, Shirley Verrett, Placido Domingo, and Martti Talvela.
"Ode To Joy" (German: "An die Freude", first line: "Freude, schöner Götterfunken") is an ode written in 1785 by the German poet, playwright and historian Friedrich Schiller, celebrating the ideal of unity and brotherhood of all mankind. It is best known for its musical setting by Ludwig van Beethoven in the final movement of his Ninth Symphony (completed in 1824), a choral symphony for orchestra, four solo voices, and choir.
The Beethoven setting is the official anthem of the European Union. The most amazing thing is that Beethoven was deaf by the time he wrote this. He imagined what each note would sound like in his head because he knew music so well. He never got to hear his own masterpiece. Beethoven truly was a genius and this finale to his “Choral” Symphony still has the ability to send shivers down the spine whilst proclaiming the greatness and optimism of humankind.
There was a poignant scene at the first performance in 1824. Despite his complete deafness, Beethoven insisted on conducting, but unknown to him the real conductor sat out of his sight beating time. As the last movement ended, Beethoven, unaware even that the music had ceased, was also unaware of the tremendous burst of applause that greeted it. One of the singers took him by the arm and turned him around so that he might actually see the ovation.
However be that as may be we can also admire this extempore version by one of the world’s most talented musicians, Beaker from the Muppets.
German words and English translation:
Baritone Solo:
O Freunde, nicht diese Töne!
Oh friends, not these sounds!
Sondern lasst uns angenehmere
Rather let us sing more
anstimmen und freudenvollere.
pleasant ones, and more full of joy.
Choral Bass join in:
Freude! Freude!
Joy! Joy!
Baritone Solo:
Freude, schöner Götterfunken
Joy, beautueous spark of divinity,
Tochter aus Elysium,
Daughter of Elysium
Wir betreten feuertrunken,
We enter drunk with fire
Himmlische, dein Heiligtum!
Heavenly One, your sanctuary!
Deine Zauber binden wieder
Thy magic power reunites,
Was die Mode streng geteilt;
All that custom has strictly divided
Alle menschen werden BrĂĽder,
All men become brothers
Wo dein sanfter FlĂĽgel weilt.
Where your gentle wing abides.
Dedicated to Frederick III of Prussia the Symphony No. 9 in D minor, Op. 125 "Choral" is the last complete symphony composed by Ludwig van Beethoven. At the first performance according to one witness, "the public received the musical hero with the utmost respect and sympathy, listened to his wonderful, gigantic creations with the most absorbed attention and broke out in jubilant applause, often during sections, and repeatedly at the end of them." The whole audience acclaimed him through standing ovations five times; there were handkerchiefs in the air, hats, raised hands, so that Beethoven, who could not hear the applause, could at least see the ovation gestures. The theatre house had never seen such enthusiasm in applause.
At that time, it was customary that the Imperial couple be greeted with three ovations when they entered the hall. The fact that five ovations were received by a private person who was not even employed by the state, and moreover, was a musician (a class of people who had been perceived as lackeys at court), was in itself considered almost indecent. Police agents present at the concert had to break off this spontaneous explosion of ovations. Beethoven left the concert deeply moved.

Lifehouse - Broken
The broken clock is a comfort, it helps me sleep tonight
Maybe it can stop tomorrow from stealing all my time
I am here still waiting though i still have my doubts
I am damaged at best, like you've already figured out
I'm falling apart, I'm barely breathing
With a broken heart that's still beating
In the pain, there is healing
In your name I find meaning
So I'm holdin' on, I'm holdin' on, I'm holdin' on
I'm barely holdin' on to you
The broken locks were a warning you got inside my head
I tried my best to be guarded, I'm an open book instead
I still see your reflection inside of my eyes
That are looking for a purpose, they're still looking for life
I'm falling apart, I'm barely breathing
with a broken heart that's still beating
In the pain (in the pain), is there healing
In your name (in your name) I find meaning
So I'm holdin' on (I'm still holdin'), I'm holdin' on (I'm still holdin'), I'm holdin' on (I'm still holdin')
I'm barely holdin' on to you
I'm hangin' on another day
Just to see what you throw my way
And I'm hanging on to the words you say
You said that I will be OK
The broken lights on the freeway left me here alone
I may have lost my way now, haven't forgotten my way home
I'm falling apart, I'm barely breathing
with a broken heart that's still beating
In the pain(In the pain) there is healing
In your name I find meaning
So I'm holdin' on (I'm still holdin'), I'm holdin' on (I'm still holdin'), I'm holdin' on (I'm still holdin'),
I'm barely holdin' on to you
I'm holdin' on (I'm still holdin'), I'm holdin' on (I'm still holdin'), I'm holdin' on (I'm still holdin'),
I'm barely holdin' on to you
You made it to 'Sisterhood'!!!
Posted below is a picture taken of me a my colleagues on the day I/ we received the great news. I tried so hard not to think about it. I prayed presenting everything I had done for the Rush Month of Sisterhood to God. "Lord you know my efforts and how hard I worked to change and to perform all the task required from me. No matter what happens, what the results may be, I have learned, I have grown, I have been challenged and it has been a blessing. I will carry and take with me everything I have learned through the Sisterhood Rush Month." That was my prayer.
First our boss told us that we could have done our best and at his words we thought we did not make it and somehow in my mind I thought God I had done my best but what could I have done more than that, surely there is something. Somehow I wanted to go back and do a little more even though I believed I had done more.
Then the envelopes were handed to us. Pr Vander was there, his wife Miss Veronica, Rodrigo, Pr Macque... the envelopes were opened and read...
CONGRATULATIONS! You have made it to sisterhood... I cried I heard Ayanda screaming and Miss Precious amazed. I don't like the way my eyes look in this picture because I had been crying after receiving the news, however I was happy and revealed in a way.
Thank God I made it and still today I am growing to be a better woman of God!
Then I was called to the office, together with two of my colleagues...

Book of Exodus - Month of June
In this month of June we at 'Sisterhood' had the book of Exodus to read for this month. Also not forgetting that we are in the spirit of the Campaign of Israel.
God heard, saw and came down. Why did He come down? The bible tells us that God was concerned about the suffering of His people. Exodus 3:7 Now this word 'concerned' caught my attention and somehow shows God in His humanly form “We are made in His image and likeness” Genesis 1:26 He is a High God but is concerned about His people because He once lived in humanly form while He was here on earth, so God knew very well the difficulty that the Israelites were going through in Egypt.
His concern shows the connection that He has with us, His people and the importance we are to Him!
Concern: Worried, Interested, shows His Caring, Attentive, Bothered, Disturbed troubled
This shows how much God is interested in us, worried about everything that happens to us Daily. Now if you think you are going through difficulties and what seems like an impossible situation, well know in truth that God sees and hears and is more concerned about you than you are yourself and for that reason He so much once to change your situation and give you an answer. It is in these times that we have to allow God to work, allowing His will to prevail in our lives. Times where we nee to surrender everything to Him. That is why we also had / have our campaign of Mt Sinai. Surrendering our petition to God in requests and cry outs and fasting.
The sacrifice of the righteous person cries out to God day and night!

A blessing for Father's Day
In this month of Sisterhood we had to show compassion to our mother's and grandmother's, I showed them the compassion and the love – but I stay with them and thought I will do to those far from me. That's when I thought of my dad. And then Mrs Marcia began the discussion on Father's Day – Eiii she hit the right spot, but the one I tried to avoid. It was still hard, when I responded to that discussion I was very nervous about the whole thing – this seemed like a big challenge for me, one that I had ignored most of my life.
I began looking for father's day cards, and every card I found was speaking about a bond between a child and a father and I just did not felt like that. A colleague of mine saw me last week in the section of cards going through father's day cards, “I never heard you speaking about your father”, is what she said. I could not even reply to her because did not know what to say and she was just as surprised.
I tried to find something for him and eventually on Saturday I went on shopping spree, just for my dad. By this day I was eager I could not wait to see his reaction because I knew he was not expecting it. When I got home I was a bit nervous to what my mother would say when I show her what I bought and was about to do for my dad.
I spoke one hint to my mother then kept quiet – then she asked me and I then told my mother everything and showed her what I bought for my dad. And my mother's response...
She had no words to express her emotions. She began to bless me...yo I was shocked, but happy. My mother thanked God for me, she blessed me and asked God to bless me and open all my ways. She thanked 'Sisterhood' and said if it were not for sisterhood this would not be happening (which is true). Yo I was releaved and happy and began thanking God myself.
Sunday I left the house early in the morning by 7:00am I was already outside my father's house. No one was expecting me and they were still sleeping. My knock woke them up! My father opened the door. After a little breathing I took out a bag that had the gift and gave to him and said 'Happy Father's Day'. Yo, he was smiling, happy and could not believe “You woke us early for a good thing,' said my dad. My step mother came and she was happy as well. Inside the pack I had placed a DVD of 'Sisterhood', as my step mother put it in the DVD Player I explained to them about 'Sisterhood' and what it had done for me and the reason I was there. “If it were not for 'Sisterhood' I would not be here today,” I said and then began to cry as I began to explain to them why I said that. My step mother was so shocked but happy as well. By this time my father was the one comforting me and telling me not to cry. “In life we learn and the important thing is that you learnt to do what is right. Even I am still learning and what you have done today has taught me a lot as well,” said my dad. I am happy to say the blessings I got from my mother a day before I got from my father as well. My dad gave me some wise words for the first time in his life and began to ask God to bless me. All this happened with my arms around him and his arms around me.
I never thought it would happen, but it did.
In the cards I gave to him I wrote my own words, and gladly acknowledged God and 'Sisterhood' and told my day that God is our greater Father. As I returned to God I pray my dad can return to God the Father.
Thank you very much!!!
