SOLOMON CAMPAIGN PRESS RELEASE

In my last blog post I wrote about a man we really need to help get into Congress, Norman Solomon.

Solomon's campaign just issued this press release and I wanted to share it:

Solomon Campaign for Congress Tops $100,000 in Contributions

Congressional candidate Norman Solomon said Tuesday that his campaign has received more than $100,000 in contributions from well over 650 individuals.

“We’re gaining the kind of traction that a grassroots campaign needs in order to win,” Solomon said. “The groundswell of support is very encouraging.” He added that hundreds of people have already volunteered to work on the campaign.

Solomon, a longtime activist and author who co-chaired the Commission on a Green New Deal for the North Bay, formally launched his campaign for Congress in mid-April. According to press reports, Congresswoman Lynn Woolsey is expected to announce on June 27 that she will not seek re-election in 2012.

The Solomon campaign made its announcement that donations have topped $100,000 on the summer solstice, noting that the campaign’s adopted symbol is the sunflower.

Solomon has pledged “a campaign that focuses on core issues of local, state and national concern.” While challenging “the undue corporate power that stands in the way of real change,” he is advocating for “guaranteed health care, full employment, green sustainability, full funding for public education, fundamental changes in federal spending priorities and an end to perennial war.”

He expressed confidence that the campaign will continue to gain strength. “A genuine grassroots campaign can beat big-money Astroturf,” he said. “We’re being well-funded by a growing base of contributors, while we gain a lot of inspiring momentum from volunteers and other supporters.”

Solomon, who has spoken at several dozen house parties and other campaign events in recent months, predicted that support for his campaign will continue to accelerate. He said that thousands of people have already visited the campaign website at www.SolomonForCongress.com.

Three years ago, Solomon was the top vote-getter when he was elected as an Obama delegate to the 2008 Democratic National Convention from the North Bay’s Sixth Congressional District. He is now in his third consecutive term as an elected member of the California Democratic Party’s state central committee. For several years Solomon has been national co-chair of the Healthcare Not Warfare campaign along with Congressman John Conyers (D-MI) and Donna Smith of the California Nurses Association.
