Shammi Kapoor Personal Life:

Shammi Kapoor had a short stint at the Ruia College, after which he joined his father’s theatrical company “Prithvi Theatres”. He made his debut in Bollywood in the year 1953, when the film Jeevan Jyoti was released. It was directed by Mr. Mahesh Kaul and Chand Usmani was Kapoor’s first heroine.

Shammi Kapoor met Geeta Bali in the year 1955, during the shooting of the film ‘Rangeen Raaten’, in which he was the main lead and she played a cameo. They fell in love, but since she was a year older to him and had acted with his elder brother and father, they were skeptical. Four months after they first met, they decided to get married. Shammi and Geeta went to Banganga Temples, near Napean Sea Road of Mumbai, and got married, with Hari Walia as the sole witness. It was only after the marriage that they informed their parents.

The couple lived a life of bliss in the coming years and had a son the following year. Aditya Raj Kapoor was born on 1 July 1956, at Shirodkar’s Hospital, Mumbai. Five years later, in 1961, they had another child. This time, it was a daughter, Kanchan. Tragedy struck the Kapoor family during the filming of Teesri Manzil (1966) and Geeta died of small pox leaving him with two small children. It led to a failed romance with Mumtaz, his co-star from Brahmchari (1968).

In 1969, he married his second wife Neela Devi Gohil from the Royal Family of Bhavnagar in Gujarat, and his significant weight gain ended his career as a romantic hero in the early 1970s, with Andaz(1971) being one of his last hits. He turned into a successful supporting actor in the 70′s, playing Saira Banu’s father in Zameer (1975), when he had been her leading man a decade earlier in Junglee(1961) and Bluff Master (1964) and playing Amitabh Bachchan’s foster father in Parvarish.

I Am Kalam Hindi Movie Review By Taran Adarsh August 5, 2011 - 11:56 IST:

Call it a coincidence, I AM KALAM is the third film this year that depicts the plight of an underprivileged kid. STANLEY KA DABBA and CHILLAR PARTY wowed viewers of all ages. Now I AM KALAM, directed by Nila Madhab Panda, makes a heartfelt and earnest effort to tell the story of a deprived kid and also, how the fortunate and blessed can play a crucial role in the upliftment of the marginalized kids across the globe.

I AM KALAM is engaging and entertaining in its own way and like STANLEY KA DABBA and CHILLAR PARTY, it doesn't make the kids act or behave like grownups. In fact, I AM KALAM is more like a fantasy that tells the story of a pauper and a prince, though this one is set in the present day. One of the reasons why I AM KALAM works is because the kid, who works at the roadside dhaba, represents millions of kids who are deprived of education and can become responsible citizens if nurtured and shown the right path. It's a sensitive story that adopts a positive attitude towards the less-privileged millions.

I AM KALAM is charming and fun and at the same time, it touches topics such as poverty, abuse and child labor most effectively, without being dark or gritty. The inclusion of footage of former President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam makes the goings-on all the more believable and inspirational. In fact, this fairytale is well handled and is sure to strike a chord with the discerning viewer.

Despite being born into abject poverty, Chhotu [Harsh Mayar], an ingenious child with a joyful temperament, does not let his dismal conditions overpower him. In order to support his family, he works in a small roadside food stall during the day; however he spends his evenings reading books he has somehow managed to gather. He dreams of getting educated and commanding his own destiny.

On a hot sultry day, Chhotu encounters the local prince [Hussan Saad]. The pauper is captivated at the sight of the crisp tie that the prince sports. He is immediately drawn towards it. The prince eyes the camel the pauper has tamed and is instantly mesmerized. Thus, an unlikely friendship is struck between the two, which dares to defy the stringent class barriers of the village.

One day, upon hearing a speech from Dr. Abdul Kalam, the former President of India, Chhotu vows to change his future. From that day forward, the enterprising lad drops the name Chhotu -- a tag used to identity countless child labors across India -- and adopts the alias 'Kalam'. Like the former President, Chhotu pledges to become a hero someday. He is aided in his mammoth quest by his loyal friend, the prince.

I AM KALAM celebrates the survival of the human spirit against overwhelming odds. In fact, I genuinely felt while watching the film that it could be anyone's story, not necessarily a kid's. Moreover, like STANLEY KA DABBA and CHILLAR PARTY, it throws light on the issue of child labor that's rampant not just in India, but across the globe.

A film like I AM KALAM also conveys a strong message that every child deserves a good childhood and of course, education, which should not be deprived at any cost. The message comes across loud and clear and not once do you feel that it gets preachy or adopts a documentary format to drive home this message. It's an inspirational film made with noble intentions. While the writing [script: Sanjay Chauhan] is absorbing in most parts, it gets slightly unreal when Chhotu travels to Delhi and how his family/friends trace him so easily in the crowded metropolis.

I AM KALAM has an ensemble cast which includes the likes of experienced names such as Gulshan Grover [first-rate], French actor Beatrice Ordeix [natural], Pitobash [excellent] and Meena Mir [perfect]. But the film belongs to the child actors -- Hussan Saad [the prince] and Harsh Mayar [Chhotu/Kalam] -- who pitch in sterling acts. You just can't help but fall in love with the two kids. Harsh, in particular, is absolutely wonderful.

On the whole, I AM KALAM is an inspiring and motivating film that deserves to be encouraged. Recommended!

Warning Movie Review:

Directly or indirectly, terrorism has influenced the lives of all and sundry. The issue has been portrayed in numerous motion pictures. Yet another film on terrorism may seem tedious, which is why, I presume, Karan Razdan must have added an unexpected twist to the story of his new film THE WARNING. Replicating the 26/11 attacks in Mumbai at the very commencement, the writer-director merges supernatural and the concept of karma in the plotline of his new endeavor. What happens to the terrorist in his afterlife? That's a first for a Bollywood film.

However, let me add, the emphasis in THE WARNING isn't on terrorism alone, but supernatural as well. Souls don't die… People communicate with the dead… At the same time, THE WARNING doesn't make you shriek, like most films that tackle the issue of supernatural do, since it's only towards the finale that the identity of the spirit is revealed. An interesting concept, indeed!

But not all interesting concepts transform into fascinating films. Sure, the concept of THE WARNING had the potential to strike a chord, but what unveils on screen fails to register an impact. While the issue of terrorism tries to borrow from real life, the supernatural element could've been the USP of this enterprise. Unfortunately, it's half-baked!

A boatman Ramsharan [Karan Razdan] is captured on high seas by the mujahideen. His trawler is taken over. Men working under him are killed. The course of his trawler is altered. Azaan Khan [Atul Kulkarni], who is the leader of the jihadis, is on a mission to get into India and kill innocent people. A fight takes place whereby Ramsharan is shot dead by Azaan.

Ramsharan's family in the village consisting of his father [Satish Kaushik], mother [Ila Arun], wife [Rituparna Sengupta] and daughter Muskaan [Jannat] grieve the death of Ramsharan. Muskaan has a lot of innocent questions to ask about her father's death. In fact, the concept of death is alien to her.

A spirit begins to haunt Muskaan. The dead are trying to reach out to her. A maulana [Anang Desai] tries to help the family. He introduces them to Peer Jammatuddin Shah Baba [Anupam Kher]. A strange thing happens one night. The spirit attacks. It writes something on the wall. Whose spirit is it? What is it trying to say or do?

When you have an interesting plot on hand, it's a responsibility, in fact a task, to deliver a film that leaves a stunning impression on the viewer. In this case, since it combines terrorism and supernatural, it ought to thrill and scare you during the course of the journey, which, regrettably, it doesn't. THE WARNING succeeds in bits and spurts. The finale, when the spirit communicates with the family, is a redeeming aspect. But the path undertaken by the screenplay to reach the finale leaves a lot to be desired. Also, the sequences involving Zakir Hussain and the ones involving Govind Namdeo are an absolute letdown. The effects are of the run of the mill variety.

Director Karan Razdan had a wonderful premise on hand, but the screenplay, penned by him, doesn't do justice to a refreshing thought. Cinematography is alright, although the locations are eye-catching.

Anupam Kher enacts his part with fervor. Satish Kaushik, Ila Arun and Rituparna Sengupta are talented actors all, but the characters don't give them scope to rise beyond a point. Besides, making the characters deliver lines in Gujarati appears odd. Jannat is strictly okay. Atul Kulkarni is hardly there. Zakir Hussain doesn't impress. Ditto for Govind Namdeo. Anang Desai and Karan Razdan are passable. Suhas Khandke gets no scope.

On the whole, THE WARNING is a good opportunity gone astray.

Chala Mussaddi - Office Office Movie Review:

Hollywood has done it. Now Bollywood follows suit. Small screen to big screen adaptations are gradually becoming a norm. CHALA MUSSADDI OFFICE OFFICE isn't the first instance. KHICHDI: THE MOVIE, inspired by a popular TV serial of the same name, had released a year ago.

A film like CHALA MUSSADDI OFFICE OFFICE arrives at the right time, when dishonesty and bribery are the hot topics of discussion and deliberations. For, the film deals with this burning issue and how the common man bears the brunt of it all. In fact, one of the reasons why OFFICE OFFICE, the tele-serial, became hugely popular with audiences was because people could connect with the character of Mussaddi, a man bogged down by the corrupt system. Mussaddi's tryst with the corrupt babus is now adapted on the big screen with ordinary results.

CHALA MUSSADDI OFFICE OFFICE mirrors the current state of affairs in India. It's a statement on the work culture in government offices, besides focusing on the plight of the common man to get his work done and make ends meet. Besides the popular character of Mussaddi, director Rajiv Mehra has retained the cast of the tele-show for the audiences to connect instantly with the characters.

On the flip side, though one identifies with the common man in CHALA MUSSADDI OFFICE OFFICE and you may draw parallels with real-life, the film doesn't hit you like a ton of bricks. That's because the drama isn't as invigorating and impactful. One has witnessed all this and more in real/reel life and the sequence of incidents don't really catch you unaware. The writer [Ashwni Dhir] and director [Rajiv Mehra] make an effort to pack just about every corrupt aspect that occur in our day-to-day lives in those 1.30 hours, but barring an incident or two, you absorb these sequences monotonously, without going through any emotion [ecstatic / distressing]. You aren't elated either, when the common man stands vindicated in the finale.

Retired schoolmaster Mussaddi Lal Tripathi [Pankaj Kapur], the quintessential common man, troubled by his wife's [Farida Jalal] serious illness, takes her to the hospital where the utter negligence and vested interests of the doctors result in her untimely death. Mussaddi, along with his unemployed son Bunty [Gaurav Kapoor], sets out for his pilgrimage to the four Holy sites for the immersion of his wife's ashes. In his absence, the pension officers arrive at Mussaddi's house to enquire his status. Mussaddi's neighbor tells them that Mussaddi has gone far away and the Pension Officers interpret that Mussaddi has expired and report him dead in their files.

When Mussaddi returns, he discovers to his utter shock that he is dead, according to government files. He tries his best to make the Pension Office staff believe that he is alive, but they are not convinced at all as they want proof. Bemused and dejected by the irony of the situation, Mussaddi sets out on his mission to gather proof that he is alive, while the Pension Office employees resolve that whatever proof Mussaddi brings, they will not allow him to be officially alive since they have already mopped up his pension money. That's when Mussaddi decides to revolt in his own way.

Director Rajiv Mehra and writer Ashwni Dhir try to encompass various incidents highlighting the corrupt system and the dilemma of the common man, but corruption, as an issue, is beaten to death in Hindi movies. Ideally, the writer should've integrated incidents that are hitherto unknown to a wide majority. Only then this fight-for-right saga would've created the desired impact. Also, though the courtroom sequence towards the end is well handled, the entire exercise of recreating the incident at the venue looks so unreal in a film that strives to be real. Also, the humor associated with the tele-serial is missing here.

Pankaj Kapur is a versatile actor and he portrays the plight of the common man most effectively. Sanjay Mishra, Deven Bhojani, Manoj Pahwa, Hemant Pandey and Asawari Joshi are cast in varied roles and each of them sparkles in their respective parts. Gaurav Kapoor is wonderful. Vinay Jain leaves a mark in a brief role. Farida Jalal appears in a cameo, while Makarand Deshpande makes an appearance in a song. Mahesh Thakur [as the judge] leaves a mark.

On the whole, CHALA MUSSADDI OFFICE OFFICE releases at a time when corruption and bribery are piping hot topics, but the impact it ought to make is missing. Those who recall the tele-serial fondly may reconnect with the on-screen characters, but how one wishes the drama was as impactful. Bluntly put, the tele-serial was much, much better than the film!

The film is produced by Smile Foundation and Eleeanora Images Private Limited.More of a documentary, ‘I Am Kalam’ teaches that more than your fate it’s your Karma that matters. Shahrukh Khan says that he use to sleep at a road side bench and daily borrow Rs.20 from a friend to reach film city before he became a super star. Background score of the film by Deepak Pandit is absolutely in sync with the screenplay. Cinematography, editing, lyrics, art direction are bang on. The film has no breaks, and is an inspiring story and a commendable attempt by director Nila Madhab Panda.Coming to the technicalities, the film boasts of flawless performances by Gulshan Grover, Harsh Mayar, Meena Mir and even Beatrix Ordeix. But who stands out of all is definitely Husaan Saad, who is profoundly talented as Kunwar Rannvijay Singh. He is a natural stunner and gives a spectacular performance. Pitobash who was last seen in Ekta Kapoor’s ‘Shor In The City’ is a pure genious. He plays Chhotu’s co-worker who is slightly jealous of this smart-witted chap. But there is a possibility that a must watch for all classes and ages, ‘I Am Kalam’ might be seen as a multiplex film. As they truly say, life is not what you couldn’t do so far, it’s about what you can do now. It is sheer determination and your eagerness to make it big that will create wonders in life.

Years after his death, Adolf Hitler has been kept alive and breathing by movie makers across the globe. Many a film-maker has made a film on the German leader, who was responsible for World War II. In fact, the Second World War and Hitler have been fascinating subjects through the decades, with a number of international projects depicting the atrocities committed by the dictator.

Though there have been many films on Mahatma Gandhi, including the Academy Award winning GANDHI, GANDHI TO HITLER is the first Hindi film that attempts to tell the story of the Nazi leader on celluloid. It portrays his final days, hiding in a bunker in Berlin after his downfall. Director Rakesh Ranjan Kumar also portrays the relationship that he shared with his associates, his paranoia, his insecurities during those days.

While Hitler was taking on the world, Mahatma Gandhi had penned two letters to the dictator to reconsider his political decisions. Also, though volumes have been written about Hitler, one knows very little about Eva Braun, his longtime companion whom Hitler married in his final days. There's also a story of Indian soldiers fighting with the Russians on German soil running concurrently in the film.

Gandhi To Hitler Review By Taran Adarsh:

Though the film focuses on Hitler and Mahatma Gandhi, two contrasting ideologies that changed the course of history in that era, GANDHI TO HITLER is no war film. Nonetheless, the director has used B & W documentary footage of World War II all through the film. Though the film could've documented a reality most effectively, mainly for those who are keen to know what actually occurred in the final days, not just in India but also internationally, the film comes across as an amateur attempt that leaves zilch impact.

One of the reasons why one doesn't relate to the on-screen characters is because Indian actors have been cast in the roles of Hitler and his associates and also French and Russian soldiers, which, in my opinion, makes it look counterfeit. Besides, the director intercuts Mahatma Gandhi preaching non-violence and Hitler stomping around in his bunker rather abruptly, besides, of course, a story of Indian soldiers fighting on German soil. It just doesn't work!

World War II. Adolf Hitler's ruthless ambition for German expansion is becoming increasingly violent and inhuman. Whereas another nation, India, struggles in its fight for freedom against the British as Mahatma Gandhi continues to appeal to his countrymen to adopt a stand of non-violence. A stark contrast in ideologies. Mahatma Gandhi, one day, decides to pen a letter to the German dictator... a letter he hoped would persuade Hitler to change his path and avoid the Second World War, avoid the massive calamity that it would bring on.

Mahatma Gandhi then wrote a second letter to Hitler, this time closer to Hitler's own downfall, at a time when Hitler was plagued with betrayal all around him, while confined to an underground bunker. The film looks at Hitler's downfall, his last days when only his love Eva Braun and his trusted aide Joseph Goebbels stood by him, as Germany crumbled around him and his devoted comrades deserted him.

Though the intentions of GANDHI TO HITLER are right -- it spreads the message of peace, which is so relevant in today's context when the world continues to tackle the dark clouds of terrorism -- the execution of the subject is so amateurish that it leaves you distraught. After a messed up first hour, the film tries to find rhythm and focus in its post-interval portions, but barring a scene or two, it doesn't register an impact like the way the Academy Award nominated film DOWNFALL [2004] did. The only thing that stands out in the film is the cinematography by Fuwad Khan.

Raghuvir Yadav fails to look his part and seems uncomfortable while mouthing lines in English. Neha Dhupia doesn't get any opportunity to display histrionics. Aman Verma is at best decent, while Lucky Vakharia is strictly okay. Nalin Singh, Nikita Anand, Bhupesh Kumar Pandey and Avijit Dutt [as Mahatma Gandhi] are alright.

On the whole, GANDHI TO HITLER fails to connect.
