THOUGHT OF THE DAY... AND EVERY DAY

I came across this recently on a kindred site:

"The bread you do not use is the bread of the hungry. The garment hanging in your wardrobe is the garment of the person who is naked. The shoes you do not wear are the shoes of the one who is barefoot. The money you keep locked away is the money of the poor. The acts of charity you do not perform are the injustices you commit."

St. Basil the Great (4th century)(pictured)

Also found this version. (Will have to find old Basil to see in which instance he was misquoted. The one below sounds like a modern rendition, don't you think?)

“The bread in your cupboard belongs to the hungry man; the coat hanging unused in your closet belongs to the man who needs it; the shoes rotting in your closet belong to the man who has none; the money which you hoard in the bank belongs to the poor. You do wrong to everyone you could help, but fail to help.”

PS: It's great to see I have my first blog "follower"!
