Dr McWhorter:
I take issue with the substantive arguments that you make as to why it would be a "mistake" for MSNBC - The "Un-FOX-Biased Biased Network" to hire Professional Progressive Political Preacher Rev Al Sharpton for its 6pm slot.
I can think of no other person who would fit right at home in that particular slot.
You choose to bring in the indictments about "Twana Brawley" and "Freddie's Fashion Mart" from Sharpton's past, prior to his make-over. In my opinion these points that you have layered against Sharpton's worthiness for the job at MSNBC are about as effective as changing the street signs in violent communities in honor of "Civil Rights Heroes", hoping that the respect from Street Pirates toward these figures would cause them to respect a live person walking upon the now sacred passage-way.
Long story short - no one cares!!!
Real quick Dr McWhorter - let's play a game of matched pairs
- Hot - ? (Cold)
- Tall - ? (Short)
- Black - ? (White)
- Male -? (Female)
- Democrat -? (Republican)
- FoxNews - ?????????
Dr McWhorter - the answer is "MSNBC". Not "CNN".
Why throw in that passing reference to CNN's Elliot Spitzer? You know as well as I do that for the Black Progressive-Fundamentalist "Fox News" and its News Corp parent is the red meat that they are going after.
I actually disagree with you regarding PPPP Rev Al Sharpton's capability to stand up to the "level" of Olbermann or O'Donnell. I watched Sharpton sitting in the chair of MSNBC windbag Ed Schultz for the entire week. In as much as Sharpton's message was indistinguishable from the show's namesake - I call this a win in his ability to live up to the par for the course.
I even disagree with your argument that Sharpton is purely a "race man". At a time when the Black unemployment rate is 16.2% and an assortment of other problems persist in our community - Sharpton saw fit to put Republican Herman Cain on trial one night and the Republican Mitt Romney on trial later in the week - all without running down the sitting president (who is Black) for taking our "Equal Black Ballots" and not providing our community with a sufficient "Return On Investment".
The Truth - There Is No More Of An "Organic Black Community Uplift Agenda"
Dr McWhorter you are attempting to plug PPPP Rev Al Sharpton into a role that INTEGRATION has stripped away from him. There are no more "Black Leaders" in America - operating any free standing "Black" organizations. These organizations are now largely part of a MACHINE.
The fact that PPPP Rev Al Sharpton is able to be plugged into "MSNBC" shows evidence of a "joint venture partnership".
With The Grio.com sprouted as an appendage of the "Forward Leaning" MSNBC - the content of their web site - is merely the "LampBlack" edition of MSNBC messaging.
The Angry Black Progressive Journalists That Have Been Passed Over
The back channel story recently was the news that some "Black journalists" were upset that Sharpton, an activist and not a journalist was chosen over them, more "qualified" journalists.
Dr McWhorter as we listen to the talking points within the Black community - "Fox News is not a real journalistic organization" enjoys popular airplay. We all know that, in truth, MSNBC is merely a left-wing version of Fox News - with the prevailing Progressive-Fundamentalist axiom: "We produce no organic hatred in our dogged actions. We use hatred to respond to hatred. We keep our enemies on trial because they are corrupt and in their ranks is where you will find the crimes".
The only thing that one can conclude as time is invested in reviewing FoxNews and MSNBC is that Black people prefer a left-wing biased slant on the news.
Having tuned into both of these messaging machines for years - I notice that Rachel Maddow's main flaw as it relates to Black people is not that she will doggedly pursue a "Black Hip Hop Star" to the point where one has to question her motives. Instead her utility to the present concerns of the Black community is in her unwillingness to make note of the high rate of Black homicide - for example - and treat this as an EQUAL threat that the various "Tea Party Militia Terrorists" might render upon the "vulnerable masses". If there is no linkage that she can make between a point of dysfunction within the Black community and the residue of "chattel slavery" - she and her Black Progressive viewing audience tacitly agree to not cover that issue - lest one of them get their feelings hurt. It is far better to keep the mutual enemy on trial.
For the Black journalist who values his own credibility and integrity - the question of "Why either of these battling house of lords?" is the more appropriate question. In truth, Mr McWhorter - the choice of either of them often makes a statement about one's own ideological proclivity.
In short, sir, your analysis is wrong. PPPP Rev Al Sharpton is a perfect fit for MSNBC.
My greater concern is that he be removed from his unfettered access to our "Community Consciousness Nucleus" so he can molest our permanent interests no more.
