The Root.com: CNN Can't Find Anyone Qualified Who Is Black
When they are allowed to produce news shows/web sites to their own liking as they have the final say the Black community is serviced with shows like:
- "Obama's Rolex Watch With Roland 'Thurgood' Martin And Smokie"
- The 2008 Pre-Election Special On BET Which Ran Like A 30 Minute Obama Campaign Commercial
- "The Grio-Root
Today we stand as a "fully integrated" people. The evidence of this is NOT were Black people live but how the Black community development struggle has become a purely political struggle within the auspices of the American Political Domain. No longer outsiders - these operative organizations work to protect the "Black President" from his Republican oppositions attacks - all the while they are forced to place the Black community issues on the back burner. These are the VERY ISSUES that we as a community were promised would be fixed within IF we invested our "Equal Black Ballots" and our "Black Community Consciousness" so that the forces that we are fused with could win power.
It does not take a great bit of insight to understand that when the Black community's EMOTIONS have been fused to such an end - that there will be too few people willing to stand up and sound the alarm about what the congregation has been ensconced into doing. Take a listen to the Al Sharpton video on MSNBC below. The man who is the epitome of Dr King is able to run through the opening segment as guest host on "The Ed Show" to fight his political enemies without once correlating anything back to a testament of how his ideology has provided organic uplift for the Black community or the working class union member who he had on the show. We are told that the failure for the government to order more steel - using FEDERAL DEBT MONEY was the cause of the plant closure. This provides ample insight of the economic theories that are at play and why when this became the prevailing theory - many plant closures occurred which hurt communities just like the one shown.
Schuyler represented the third leg of the debate that is often cast as one between the "Black Radicals" (Malcolm X & Stokely Carmichael) versus the Establishment/Integrationalist Blacks (Martin King & Ralph D. Abernathy).
For a man like Schuyler to be on record as being seen puncturing holes in the legacy of those who we now hold up as icons without imperfection - it affords a person like me who is living today, observing similar antics among those who claim the mantle of Blackness with a greater perspective. It bears a certain truth - There was never a time when Black people were in monolithic agreement about the way forward. And, more importantly - the old adage that "History is the narrative written by the victor" is true for the Black community's history as well.
The key phrase of interest to me from George S. Schuyler is the term "Lamp Blacked". He used this reference to describe the faux coverage of "blackness" that Black Progressives during the "Harlem Renaissance" had enveloped their politics, arts and intellectualism in while denying that the entire package was wholly "American" sans the coating.
Mr Schuyler's scathing analysis proves useful in our understanding of the forces that swirl around today, their dust storms seeking to leave all that they touch covered with a film of black soot.
In the matter of the recent "dust storm" initiated by the NAACP upon the news that CNN has cancelled its lead 8pm slot that once had "Elliot Spitzer" due to low ratings. Seeing an opportunity to add its two cents to the matter - the NAACP and other Black Progressive operatives mentioned the lack of racial diversity in the PROGRESSIVE channel line up of the cable news networks. (Specifically CNN but by inference MSNBC).
While various Progressive Operatives like Progressive Political Preacher Rev Al Sharpton were seen given Conservative Fox News host Glenn Beck an appropriate send off (Al Sharpton is seen telling beck that he is not one of the 'big boys" DESPITE his having better ratings than any show on CNN or MSNBC) - when Spitzer's show was sent to the trash heap - they did not throw a party at "Media Matters" or give Spitzer and CNN some advice on how to change their ways. Instead they went looking for the resumes of a number of different Black PROGRESSIVE hosts that could fit the bill - in their opinion.
My Observation - A White Progressive Is Equally Able To Provide A Message That Black Progressives Are Satisfied With Consuming - Thus A Black Progressive Brings Only Superficial Distinctions To The Table Than Does Their Joint-Venture Partner
Anyone that watched PPP Rev Al Sharpton keeping the seat of MSNBC's "The Ed Show" warm for one week would note that Sharpton's script was indistinguishable to that of Schultz - but for more references to James Brown and the inclusion of but a few more Black faces.
PPP Rev Al Sharpton spent the week "keeping the Republican enemy on trial" - a task perfectly executed by O'Donnell, Maddow and Schultz. Every time PPP Rev Sharpton had the opportunity to promote "The Black Community's Permanent Interests" with the AUDACITY to make reference to the forces who Black people had previously invested our confidence in, obtaining results that fell short of our needs as a people - a commercial break to pay the bills came about and PPP Rev Sharpton merely moved on to the next Republican indictment. Without "Media Matters" or "The Color Of Change" on his trial - he was free to lead the show as he chose to.
I find that the best way to find the "True North" of a Black Progressive-Fundamentalist - is to let them alone, allowing them to talk about what will be proven to be their primary interests. After careful accounting over time - we see that it is NOT the events that are transpiring WITHIN the Black community. It is their on-going shooting war with the conservative Republican enemy.
Why then does CNN or MSNBC need a Black face to carry out the mission?
The Diversity Game has been hijacked over the years. It is now used as an INDICTMENT against those who refuse to play ball with the activists who promote it as evidence of a firm's "progressiveness". Just as with the debate on the effects of public criticism of Commander In Chief Obama - the same mindset makes a calculation of the damage that their grenades thrown against their target.
CNN merely needs to show that they have "Black friends" and to note the good will received when they aired:
- Black In America I
- Hispanic In American
- Black In America II
The most rational come back for a CNN executive would be to use the same talking points heard by Sharpton and others: "Do you think that you are going to see 'Black In America III' on Fox News?". This is the "look at all that I have done for you" - the Progressive counterpoint to "Look at all of the Black friends that I have" that conservatives use.
It is quite ironic that "Color Of Change" is far more focused on checking FoxNews, which so few Blacks watch - than they are in compelling the more progressive networks to own up to the intention span that Black Progressives invest in them.

Progressive Political Preacher Rev Al Sharpton's arguments over the Pennsylvania steel plant are closer to "Atlas Shrugged" than anything I have ever seen before. He argued that the "Obama Debt Stimulating Stimulus Page" was not LARGE Enough and contained too many tax cuts (note President Bill Clinton can be seen on C-SPAN recently praising these same tax cuts BECAUSE it put money into the pockets of ALL AMERICANS faster than any other means possible). Sharpton wants us to believe that an order of steel made by the government to repair or build up new infrastructure would have been "Shovel Ready" in a short period of time and thus sufficient to keep the plant open. No mention of "RFPs", "Environmental Impact Studies", "Design & Engineering" time or anything else that those in the real world know are a part of civil engineering. He may as well had argued that the Obama Administration give the money directly to the workers in salary and have the plant remain open but idle until the government projects get to the point of being ready to submit an actual order. (Do you see how perverted the economy gets when you believe that "Government Creates Jobs"? Why not just cut to the chase and hand out the money directly to the people?) Our modern day "Martin Luther King"offers advice to Fox New's Glenn Back on how the next time he can get on stage with "the big boys" when Beck's show had better rating than ALL OF MSNBC's shows. Why didn't Sharpton think to give advice to Olbermann and Spitzer upon the cancellation of their shows? Or to suggest to his friend Ed Schultz on what he needs to do to avoid getting suspended again? | ||

The Real "Black Press" need not become more "conservative" to meet my standards.
It must first commit to basing its reporting upon the "Permanent Interests" of the Black Community and then use its power of the pen to bring reform.
