Microsoft is holding its official launch of its cloud-hosted application suite, known as Office 365, on June 28.
CEO Steve Ballmer will be on hand at the New York launch event, according to an invitation I received.
There’s no question Microsoft has a stronghold on productivity software when it comes to desktop computers. But as the software giant tries to refocus on putting Office on the Internet – or, in the “cloud” – Microsoft faces a formidable opponent: Google.

With Tuesday’s launch of Office 365, Microsoft is adding the Office Web Apps – available for everyday consumers since last summer’s launch of Office 2010 – to its cloud-based productivity offerings for businesses. Previously, the company’s Business Productivity Online Suite (with the smirk-worthy nickname BPOS) offered secondary services such as Exchange Online (for email), SharePoint Online (for collaboration), Office Communications Online (now rebranded Lync) and Live Meeting (for online presentations).
The lightweight, online versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote allow people to create, edit and view Office documents from their Web browsers. They’re not as full-featured as their desktop counterparts, but they’re powerful enough to get the most jobs done.
With the Office Web Apps, Microsoft’s new Office 365 goes head-to-head with Google Apps, the Internet giant’s cloud productivity offering. There’s Google Docs (for word processing and spreadsheets), Gmail and Google Calendar (for email and scheduling), Google Chat (for communications) and a number of other online applications that can be bundled.
In the past two years, a cloud-productivity battle has been simmering between Microsoft and Google.
