Prof Melissa Harris-Perry "Demystifies Black Conservatism" In The Nation Magazine
I tried to be open minded when I saw the title and then saw:
- The Author - Melissa Harris-Perry
- The Source - "The Nation" Magazine
It was the picture of Rachel Maddow at the top of the screen that prevented me from accepting the piece as transparent.
When I read Prof Melissa Harris-Perry's review of "Black Conservatism" the first thing that I asked myself is "Has Ms Perry ever penned a critical and skeptical piece on Black Progressive-Fundamentalists? " Or even Obama?
I was actually disarmed by the first paragraph of the article. She laid out the "Organic Competency Development" meme more clearly than I was originally willing to admit.
Then it went down hill from there.
I Will Move Beyond The Transactional Indictment And Will Define Ms Perry's Framework
From the last few paragraphs of Ms Perry's article I was able to detect the assembly of a FRAMEWORK for the appraisal of a particular dogma for the Black community. Of course Mrs Perry put "Black Conservatism" on trial and listed in detail how many of his conservative antics are counter to the interests of the Black community.
- Using the tactic of proclaiming one's self "Authentically Black" based on "slave blood" is a no no
- There is "racial complexity" that confound "simplistic racial reasoning"
- RACISM (!!!!!) is more than someone calling a "Ninja" (or voicing criticism of Commander In Chief Obama)
- THE NEW RULES ON "RACISM"
- Policies that lead to DISPARATE IMPACT on Black communities
- Practices that "Deepen Racially Unequal Outcomes
- Policies that "Continue the Racial Health Disparities that impact Black Americans
- Voting and Registration Regulations that disenfranchise hundreds of thousands of Black voters
- Whites voting for a Black man does not free them from indictments of racism.
As I rescanned the entire article looking for gems of wisdom from Mrs Perry to pull out I could not help but realize that she lacks the "Intellectual Curiosity" to dare apply her framework to "favorable Black Progressive-Fundamentalist candidates" and their POLICY OUTCOMES.
You see - as it stands today the prevailing Black political consciousness and the activism movement that is associated with it is all about "Social Justice" and the INTENTION to achieve it. At this time last week as I got up early in the morning on Friday to go through the community of Overbrook to see how the successful implementation of these favored policies had actually benefited the Black residents within - I saw what Mrs Perry is loathed to talk about.
"Herman Cain has never held an elective office and he is a favorite of a 'Tea Party' which doesn't like Black people or the Black President" is the primary indictment for Herman Cain. As the Black Racial Services Machine seeks to find their narrative on how to pick apart this threat to their favored Obama they are also loathed to move beyond "KEEPING THEIR ENEMY ON TRIAL" and instead PUT THEIR FRIENDS, WHO ACTUALLY HAVE POWER OVER THE BLACK COMMUNITY ON TRIAL.
It is equally true to say (in the context of Philadelphia):
- Herman Cain has never been associated with the Black Progressive Political Activist Machine that, by all measure has achieved its operational goals for power aggregation in the city - BUT which has left the Black community in suspended animation with regard to the key elements of the engine for social and economic uplift
- Herman Cain was not involved in the scandal surrounding the academically failing Rev Dr Martin Luther King Jr High School and the attempts to use political favors to skew the outcome on which school reform non-profit would be chosen to operate the school - the people who were caught, thus far not suffering any political damage because they are too powerful
- Herman Cain has never been with in the Philadelphia Criminal Justice and Law Enforcement community where a "friendly Black face" or "Progressive Disposition" which acquired sufficient Black votes has NOT lead to a change in the racial make up of the inmate population
INTENTIONS Versus Actual OUTCOMES
The main failing of Mrs Perry's analysis is that she can't bring herself to look at the "Mission Accomplished" zones where her favored Progressive-Fundamentalist policies rue the day. The carrot placed in front of Black people signaling HOPE for the future is a more powerful elixir than the aspirin needed in the morning hangover which is needed to cure the headache of squandered dreams due to misaligned methodologies.
One who advocates for the best interests of Black people - yet lacks the operational and governance means of ever achieving these ends often are able to draw upon the confidence and loyalties of our people. Since so much of their initial run was based on the invisible force of "racial gravitational pull" - when this same machine stands at the 2nd or 3rd or 4th interval under which our community has lived under its tutelage but still has not received the grand benefits that have been promised - the same person with the wireless microphone in his hand are able to tap, once again, into that HOPE, explaining that their present circumstances and malaise is a proof that the powers standing against us have "Messed Us Up" more than they had anticipated. An additional term in office is needed so that they can "Represent Black people at the table of POWER, ensuring that when the goods are divided that the Tea Party doesn't take more than their fair share, leaving Blacks with nothing".
It would be grand if Prof Perry were to turn around and "go deep inside" of the Black Community consciousness. She would see that what is expressed as "Social Justice Resolve" via activism is really only an instantiation of HATRED. As with most left-wing accounting of hatred - theirs is not ORIGINAL. They "hate" because their adversary HATED FIRST. Their's is merely a "Defensive" or "Reciprocal Hatred". The truth is that the reason why the Black community is able to be strung along, without those who have failed to develop COMMUNITY UPLIFT in the 25 years since I was immersed in the Black community of West/SW Philly in question is because those who own the 'Community Consciousness' realize that they can mask their failures by crafting indictments against the ENTIRE SOCIETY and use the framework of SOCIAL JUSTICE as the law book for their court case.
I wish that Prof Perry could take her bullet points and explain away the tale of those who came from afar - not bathed in the consciousness that is sculpted within the community, yet who have looked upon these same lands and saw opportunities in retailing. Beyond the presence of the immigrant owned corner store is some unseen financing and wholesale distribution system which allows them to multiply right under the eyes of those who are watching Cain and the Tea Parties' every move, waiting for them to draw their knife and slash the neck.
The final bullet point is most important but it requires a bit of Intellectual Curiosity to full grasp its power.
Prof Perry says that "WHITE PEOPLE should not feel themselves free of RACISM after voting for a Black man in blue or red". Point well taken. I argue that BLACK PEOPLE should ponder the very same framework with regard to the matrix of IDEOLOGY and RACE. Thus those who have loyally used the VOTE as the key means of racial and community uplift - because it was the POPULARLY ACCEPTED VESSEL - should not be absolved for their complicity in the present circumstances that have only lifted up "Favorable People Into Power" while the masses continue to stagnate.
Beyond the "Stolen Black Ballot" is the "Equal Black Ballot" which is worthless in the "Mission Accomplished Domain". The next generation of favorable candidates (All Democrats with some reference to "Community Organizing" or Labor - see Black Star News paper) that are making a run against the old guard Democratic fixtures that have occupied the seats of power since the early 1970's - when these upstarts were born. Sadly and shamefully - absent anyone molesting their ability to register and vote as they will - these "Equal Black Ballots" - applied as such - will not have ANY marginal impact on the condition that the vast majority of these people are forced to live within. Thus I argue that Prof Perry and others have built up the magical value of the VOTE while benignly neglecting many of the other community infrastructural fortifications necessary for elevation.
