- MSNBC: May Jobs Data Shows That Recovery May Be Weakening
- The Grio: Dr Boyce Watkins - It's Groundhog Day for black unemployment rate
The following analysis and strategy might be crude and a bit cynical but it is the truth with regards to how the consciousness in America is presently configured with regards to politics and ideological advantage.
I personally do not play "Political Gotcha" with jobs and the economy. I see first hand that people are hurting for employment. Though I strongly disagree with the present administration's economic theories and their beliefs in the role that government should play in our lives I would prefer to have an economy based on organic job growth as I am proven wrong in my assumptions than I am hoping for our present state. (Organic = not based on a financial bubble created from funny money from Wall Street - as was the case in the past or the government printing loads of money - as is the case in the present but instead driven by sustainable and viable demand for goods and services within our own economy.).
The May Jobs Report
54,000 jobs created in May 2010 and the Unemployment rate/ Black Unemployment rate ticking up to 9.2% / 16.2% respectively is not going to cut it. Our economy is in an anemic state and these figures amount to a mere rounding error respectively. I also know from first hand knowledge many people who are caught in a job search and are caught with few prospects of finding gainful employment, their financial position eroding.
I have to first clarify my position: THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES DOES NOT CREATE JOBS.
I retain my position with favorable Presidents as well as unfavorable ones to my perspective. This does not mean that the American political system sees things this way and most certainly they all take advantage of whirlwind numbers and are battered in the polls from poor showings.
I do believe that they have a strong impact on the general economic conditions within which the job market exists.
- Monetary policy can put dollars in the market to prime the economy - providing incentive for "consumers of labor" to hire people in pursuit of this artificially stimulated economy
- New regulations or tax policies can stimulate or suppress economic activity (ie: energy policy or tax credits for companies doing something favorable to the policy)
How Obama Can Use The Present Contentious Political Environment To His Advantage And Win Reelection
My three blogs that frequently focus on politics and Obama (this blog, "The JingOist Journal" and "Surveillance On....") document the case that people are not fighting to advance their own "Permanent Interests" but instead are engaged in a political and ideological "cage match". As such they are often waiting for their favored politician to throw them a scrap of meat (an opportunity) for them to do the next round of combat against their enemies. This fact coupled with the information that I gathered while listening to selection of radio stations in the city that I am visiting indicates to me that the general public is tuned out from the intricate details of policy that is coming out of Washington or their state house and city hall. Instead the acquisition of "bling" or focus on activity which is going to require them to use a condom for protection was the common theme heard.
Long story short the present prevailing consciousness in America is not promoting the demand for good governance from politicians as provoked by the mass will of the people. Instead we have a sheepish consumer relationship in which an increasing among of our politics qualify for mention on "Entertainment Tonight" or "TMZ".
With all of this in mind - and with past as prologue - the best thing that President Obama could do to secure the immediate goal of his reelection is to: PROPOSE A $1 Trillion Dollar Job Creation Package right now. Specifically - targeting set asides to Black communities and certain specific geographic regions that are of political interest to the President and the Democrats.
The brilliance of this plan is that it would engage the Democratic coalition into a FIGHT FOR a certain policy initiative that they see in support of their "Permanent Interests". Before I go forward it is important to document how people think.
Most people believe that we are living in a 9.2% / 16.2% unemployment rate environment and that there were certain policies from the past that created this condition. Each ideological encampment can point to the various sins of their adversary which caused the present malaise.
If you collect a bunch of intelligence on how people think, as I do frequently, you begin to understand that most people are more interested in joining a STRUGGLE to drive their preferred ideological platform forward as they articulate the destructive impact of the other guy's past success. Conversely they are not willing to (or unable to) articulate how their own favored policies are going to successfully work.
The point remains - we are living in an environment which says - "Whom ever receives the most electoral college votes wins". We saw from the elections of 2008 and to a lesser extent 2010 that the forces that can take the marketing and coalition building advantage away from the other side wins.
The obvious choice for President Obama then is to dangle a massive jobs bill carrot in front of his base and sell this as his primary focus of his second term. I believe that while the creation of $1 trillion in new debt will have some long term negative impact on our economic position - the truth is that American politics is focused on short term popularity polls and victory in the elections every 2 years.
This plan would have Obama "Selling The Future" to his mass of supporters while ensuring that the "Obama Fist Bump Black Press" calibrates their coverage - agreeing to not compare what was promised in the spring and summer of 2008 with what has transpired from 2009 through 2011 - instead allowing them to focus on what WILL happen in 2013 and beyond IF they help Obama push through this massive job creation bill - AND fight off the ENEMY who "doesn't want {fill in the blank group} to have a job" due to their hatred.
I am serious as I type this.
Either Obama is going to have the unemployment rate "hung around his neck" (note: this same reference was called a RACIST hit on Obama when Mitt Romney used this imagery - according to Earl Ofari Hutchenson) OR he is going to get people focused on doing their part to beat their enemy.
The only problem is that people on both popular sides have no clue WHO their enemy is.
