SOUNDING OFF

[This blog entry is dedicated to two people I know who are hurting right now. Pictured: Father Daniel Berrigan.]

There's a popular expression that I really hate: "When life gives you lemons, make lemonade."

It's pretty moronic stuff. Specious. Seems clever on the surface but no logic lurks beneath.

It's saying "When things are bad, make something good from the bad." Huh?

I say this: When things are bad, look to your character.

Life can be hard. Life can be cruel. Life is a succession of events that can alternatively be considered arbitrary or the will of the Divine, take your metaphysical pick. But it is often a tough ride with no road map.

Activists need resilience. They need character. Change is never handed to you on a plate.

In life or activism, there is no substitute for character... even in times of weakness. Especially in times of weakness.

So work those character muscles, my friends. And never say die, unless you're absolutely sure you're ready to be buried.

Take care,
Adrian Zupp
