RIP Troy Davis. The fight continues. |
Troy Davis has just been executed. The time of death was 11:08pm ET, Wed. Sept. 21, 2011.
Despite the lack of evidence against him, the State of Georgia found it fitting to put him to death. President Obama failed to have the courage to take a stand.
We have to change our "justice" system. The death penalty demeans the humanity of us all and mimics the very crimes we say we abhor. It is up to all of us to end this barbaric practice.
It was noticeable that the mainstream media relegated this story to the back burner, for the most part. Email news bulletins I received from the mainstream media ignored the story leading up to the execution. The Washington Post home page, around the time the execution was set to take place (prior to the delay), mentioned it if you cared to scroll to the bottom of the page. The Huffington Post, to its credit, has made the Troy Davis case its lead story at different times.
I'll have more to say on this later. Many people will. Troy Davis has not died in vain because he has united millions of people around the world against the death penalty.
This evening is a time for reflection and, for the religious, prayer. And tomorrow we must fight again, to end capital punishment, to end injustice in all its forms and in all places, and to continue working to make our world a better place for all.
Take care,
Adrian
