THE DOOMSDAY CLOCK IS TICKING

Noam Chomsky

"The issue of enriching uranium to weapons grade is a very serious problem. The fate of the species depends on it. If such enrichment continues, we may not survive much longer." -- Noam Chomsky in his book "What We Say Goes" (highly recommended reading!)

When a non-dramatic, completely objective scholar/activist/dissident like Chomsky says we're getting very close to the edge, you'd have to be insane not to listen. (He also cites other serious threats to our existence, including climate change, in the same section of the book.) Of course it would help if the corporate media didn't stonewall him. (Still, they're too rat savvy to showcase the world's leading expert on what it is they really do.)

This isn't a guy walking around with a sandwich board that says "The End is Nigh." This is one of the most brilliant, knowledgeable human beings on the planet. Literally*. It's true that people are more aware than they were, but there's still a long way to go. And awareness means nothing unless it's followed up by serious action. Our government (in the U.S.) is not going to change anything significant (nuclear, economic, health care related, environmental etc etc) in any meaningful way unless we force the issue. Thousands did just that these last two weeks, camping outside the White House and protesting the tar sands pipeline. But we must protest more and more and more.

If we don't make our voices heard in the millions, things won't change. If things don't change, we're done. Maybe in a matter of decades. So if you're driving around in a Hummer, watching mind-numbing reality shows and not sure what all that fuss was about in Japan a while back, don't come crying when the million pound s***hammer comes down... because it'll be too late, baby.

I feel very concerned and frustrated right now. The propaganda machine is so good at keeping people in the dark. Junked up on nonsense TV and obsessed with cars and possessions and how they look and how big their house is. So many intelligent people who are just utterly and absolutely ignorant. Sometimes blissfully!

I feel, too, like I could sit here, on a Saturday night, and write 5,000 words on the impending dangers we face. But there's only two words that matter: DO SOMETHING!

Take care,
Adrian

* Noam Chomsky is one of the 10 most-quoted sources in the humanities, and the only one still alive. That list also includes Karl Marx, Shakespeare, Aristotle, Plato, Freud and The Bible. (So, if your life depended on it, and it does, would you rather get your information from him, or from some talking head owned by Rupert Murdoch?)
