Authorities identified William Johnson, 45, a 16-year veteran of the Newark Police Department as the officer killed in Thursday night's South Ward shootout. Johnson, the father of two daughters, was in a crowded Texas Fried Chicken and Pizza restaurant on Lyons Avenue just before 10 p.m. Thursday night when an unknown assailant pulled up and opened fire from a moving car. Johnson was rushed to UMDNJ and wheeled into surgery but doctors were unable to save him. He was pronounced dead at 3:10 a.m today
